This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas - curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences - and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils' music education.
Curriculum
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Each pupil in KS3 is taught Music 1 period per week (50 mins). AQA GCSE Music is an Optional subject in KS4, where it is taught in 3 periods per week.

Pupils with SEND have full access to the music curriculum , either through the adaption of learning in class, or through support in lessons with a Learning Support Assistant.
Part B: Co-curricular music
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
The Academy offers one-to-one instrumental lessons delivered by external peripatetic teachers in the following instruments: Guitar, Keyboard, Percussion, Woodwind, Voice. Pupils may take RSA Graded examinations in these instruments. Such lessons are offered subject to payment, with subsidies for PP pupils.
The Academy runs the following music groups/ ensembles: Steel Pans group, KS3 and 4 Rock Band, Latin American Music Group, Y7 Choir, Keyboard Club, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble
Pupils are able to borrow instruments over holiday periods to continue their practice and development.
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
Musical groups and individual performers have the opportunity to perform in our bi-annual (Christmas and Summer) Concerts. These are ticketed events attended by parents and other pupils.
The Academy is constantly looking for opportunities for pupils to perform in wider contexts: in November 2024 selected pupils will take part in a combined Croydon schools orchestra at the Fairfield Hall.
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
In the future we plan to:
- Increase amount of pupils opting to study music in KS4
- Maintain the number of musical groups on offer and add to the quality of their performing experiences
- Increase opportunities for established ensembles or individuals to perform to wider audiences
